Honorary Citation for Professor Emeritus Visanu Thamlikitkul, M.D. Doctorate of Medicine, honoris causa (Infectious Diseases and Clinical Epidemiology) Academic Year 2024
Professor Emeritus Dr. Visanu Thamlikitkul graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, in 1972, and a Doctor of Medicine in 1976. He obtained the Diploma of the Thai Board of Internal Medicine in 1979 from the Faculty of Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. He also earned a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from McMaster University, Canada, in 1983, and a Certificate of Clinical Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Cincinnati, the United States of America, in 1985.
Professor Emeritus Dr. Visanu Thamlikitkul began his public service as a lecturer at the Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, the Department of Medicine, in 1980, Deputy Dean for Research and Head of the Siriraj Clinical Research Center, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital (2007–2011), Vice Head of Research and Academic Section of the Department of Medicine (2008–2011), Head of Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, the Department of Medicine (2005–2018), Chair of WHO Collaborating Center for Prevention and Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance (2015–2024), Chair of the Subcommittee on the Development of the National Essential Drug List, Ministry of Public Health (2012–2016). Currently, he serves as Advisor to the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and Head of the Training Institute for Public Health Personnel on Prevention and Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance, supported by Fleming Fund, the United Kingdom. He has also been an Expert Committee of the National Policy Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance since 2017.
Professor Emeritus Dr. Visanu Thamlikitkul possesses knowledge and capabilities in various fields, including medical check and treatment services, especially the treatment of patients with infectious diseases, teaching personnel at all levels within the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and outside the Faculty on infectious diseases, evidence-based medicine, clinical research methodology, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP). In research and the administration of an organization, he is outstanding for research, especially the research on clinical epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance, prevention and containment of antimicrobial resistance, and the rational use of antimicrobial agents. He conducted more than 100 research projects, which were supported by national and international funding sources totaling over 120 million baht. He also established research collaborations with multiple countries, including the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Norway, France, Switzerland, Greece, China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong. He published more than 200 research papers in international journals with over 9,000 citations and an H-index of 48. Many of his research projects received national and international distinguished research awards. Professor Emeritus Dr. Visanu Thamlikitkul’s works and their citations have been ranked by Stanford University, the United States of America, to be in the world’s top 2% of researchers in the same field (approximately 150,000–300,000 researchers) from 2020 to 2023. A significant number of his works discover new knowledge or find more effective practices than previous one, and these findings were applied to policies and clinical practices that benefited Thai patients including patients across the world and reduced illness and mortality of a large number of patients with infectious diseases, decreased healthcare costs substantially, and also helped reduce antibiotic resistance that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations were declared as one of the most critical global health problems since 2015. Professor Emeritus Dr. Visanu Thamlikitkul was thereby appointed as an Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance Prevention and Containment by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the WHO South-East Asia.
Furthermore, Professor Emeritus Dr. Visanu Thamlikitkul supported the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, to be designated by the World Health Organization as WHO Collaborating Center for Prevention and Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance (2015–2023) and to be selected by the Fleming Fund as one of 17 institutions worldwide to serve as a Host Institution for Fellowship Training in Antimicrobial Resistance since 2018.
With his disguished and well-recognized works, Professor Emeritus Dr. Visanu Thamlikitkul received numerous awards from various organizations, including 2011 research award from the National Research Council of Thailand, 2011 and 2024 Outstanding Poster Award at the International Symposium on Antimicrobial Agents and Resistance, 2013 National Outstanding Routine to Research (R2R) Award in the tertiary service category, 2015 Thomson Reuters Thailand Frontier Author Award, 2016 Outstanding Physician (Academic) Award, 2020 Outstanding Alumnus (Academic) Award from the Siriraj Medical Alumni Association under Royal Patronage, and Siriraj Honorary Awards for many years.
With his valuable background, distinguished works, and contributions, the Mahidol University Council, at its 616th meeting on Wednesday, 21st May 2025, unanimously resolved that a Doctorate of Medicine, honoris causa (Infectious Diseases and Clinical Epidemiology) be conferred on Professor Emeritus Dr. Visanu Thamlikitkul, for his recognition.
